Bribery

03.28.2006 | 4:29 pm

Every week, I check the “What’s Your Story” site to see what lucky MSN Space-ers are being featured. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that I’m one of those lucky featured Spaceheads.

Things have changed since I last got featured, though: Now they have voting. It’s a popularity contest.

Currently, I am dead last.

This should not bother me, because as far as I know, at the end of the week, the winner gets a grand prize of absolutely nothing. But you know, it does bother me. It bothers me a lot. It’s like a group sprint to the next telephone pole. The guy who wins doesn’t get anything at all, except bragging rights.

Which begs the question: apart from a suitcase full of cash, is there any better prize in the world than bragging rights?

Vote For Me and Get Free Stuff

Realizing that I have no chance whatsoever of winning this contest on the strength of my writing, I will instead open a contest, wherein I will give away stuff to random people who comment during the week. Here’s how it works:

  • If I lose: I will give away my copy of A Sunday in Hell, the documentary about Eddy Merckx racing Paris-Nice.
  • If I get third place: I will give away the brand-new Microsoft® Wireless Laser™ Desktop 6000 wireless keyboard and mouse (retail value: $99) I purchased as a Christmas present for a family member, but then never got around to sending, as well as the Sunday in Hell video.
  • If I get second place: I will give away a brand-new, never-used, retail copy of Microsoft Office Pro 2003 (retail value: $499) that I got as thank-you schwag for participating in a recent usability study. And the wireless keyboard/mouse. And the Sunday in Hell video.
  • If I win: I will give away my one-of-a-kind prototype Banjo Brothers messenger bag, and the Office Pro box. And the wireless keyboard/mouse. And the Sunday in Hell video. I will also give away other valuable prizes which I have not listed here, but which I suspect you would like.

As you can see, I have cleverly managed to combine a contest with my need to reduce the volume of stuff I have to pack when I move in a couple months.

One little caveat: If you live somewhere where it would be expensive or problematic for me to ship (outside the US, basically), if you win you’ve got to cover the shipping costs if you want me to ship to you. I don’t mind spending a little money on shipping, but I’m not willing to take out a personal loan to do it.

Just to be Clear, How Do I Win?

You win by going to http://whatsyourstory.msn.com/, voting for me, then leaving a comment sometime this week. Or — if you aren’t able to leave a comment in my blog because you’re not in the mood to register for a .NET Passport, just go vote anyway (you don’t need to register for anything to do that) and send me a comment via email: fatty@fatcyclist.com. I’ll post your comment for you. Then all you need to do to win is get randomly selected.

And I win by having my vanity served.

BONUS: MORE FREE STUFF FROM THE BANJO BROTHERS!

My friends at Banjo Brothers have (generously, and without me even having to beg) ponied up a dozen of their soon-to-be-famous Pocket Messenger Bags to people who vote for me. Check out their blog for details. Thanks, Banjo Brothers. You rule. Even more than you used to.

PS: Tomorrow: Why I will never ever ever do another triathlon, and why nobody else should, either.

what are you talking about….Your number 1.  I voted for you today…it’s very important us cyclist stick in our packs.

  2. Comment by Andrew | 03.29.2006 | 2:05 am

Dear High Priest of High Density of Lipoproteins,

OK, are you happy? So you rigged the vote. Proud of yourself? Winning by appealing to the greed of your fellow man. So I voted for you. You make me barf.

Do you give these prizes away at random? If not, then I was just kidding.

  3. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 2:17 am

You’re well in front now Fatty, 46% with the Gelati Guy way back on 36.  Its time to zip up the jersey, lift your hands from the bars and then point to the sky, rock an imaginary baby, cross yourself or do whatever other victory salute you feel like as you roll over the What’s Your Story finish line.

BTW is your copy of Sunday In Hell brand new and unwatched?  I guess it must be because otherwise you would know it’s about Eddy in Paris – Roubaix not Paris – Nice! :-)

  4. Comment by Kathi | 03.29.2006 | 2:19 am

You’ve got my vote. How could I vote for any other site when really I read no other blog? Why do I need another blog when three of the most hilarious things I’ve ever read are here. The pieces on Jan’s haircut, Davitamon Lotto’s "Flock of Seagulls" rivival, and Assos’ advertising had me crying. Maybe I could read those on CyclingNews, but then I would miss Al Malvina’s Assos jokes and the comments of the rest of your loyal (and funny!) fan base. And, besides, where else would I find the receipe for the Best Cake in the World?!

  5. Comment by barry1021 | 03.29.2006 | 2:20 am

Great, my last shred of dignity gone. I voted. So a guy who works in the computer industry can give me computer stuff that he is trying to get rid of. I have no shame.  And let me say this–if that is a picture of you, it had better be A VERY VERY OLD PICTURE, or those of us upholding the true meaning of FAT CYCLIST are coming to your new lego house and pulling out the bottom legos in your third garage!!! You can work on your bikes in the driveway for all we will care!!!!

I already voted for you yesterday before the bribery attempt.

  7. Comment by barry1021 | 03.29.2006 | 2:37 am

Did anyone mention that Gelati Girl wrote on her blog that people should come over here and vote for FC because he is giving away free stuff (sorry but with 75 comments, like double the normal amount and only 33.6% of them funny, I can’t be bothered reading them all)?

Oooh she’s goo-oo-d!! She exposes FC for the turd that he is, and makes all her bloggers giggle and play old Van Morrison songs. FC, the only way out is to give her the software. Or let her use your third garage. Life is hard, man.

  8. Comment by bradley | 03.29.2006 | 2:39 am

Since fatcyclist is the most common source of folks getting to my blog, I can’t help but return the favor and vote for him (he’s way in the lead as of this posting at nearly 49 percent or some outlandish number). If anyone is interested in my notes from the Conference on College Composition and Communication, held last week in Chi-town, click on over. This week, I’ll be a "celebrity" judge at the ESPN College Slam Dunk/3-Point Championship, so you can read what a great honor that is. Yes, I’m an official celebrity, sanctioned by ESPN. Top that!

  9. Comment by Sue | 03.29.2006 | 3:11 am

Bradley, you must have given out some really good bribes!

Is winning swag this easy? I love this site.

  18. Comment by Jenny | 03.29.2006 | 4:05 am

Although prizes are nice…the best prize you could give us is motivation! And I thank you for all of the motivation you have given me thus far.

  19. Comment by k | 03.29.2006 | 4:19 am

Of course I entered a vote for you.  I’m even posting a link from my blog.  I want those two cats offered up by Gelati Farms.  They will make nice toys for my hounds.   :D

  20. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 4:21 am

Whoo hooo.   I voted so you’re flying up the rankings now!  Bummer that you are moving back to UT.  Keep up the blogging plz.

  21. Comment by Nanget | 03.29.2006 | 4:35 am

This is like a lead-out to the sprint. So far you have 90 lead-out men to deliver you to the line.

Just don’t mess up the sprint.

  22. Comment by TERRY | 03.29.2006 | 4:39 am

What fun! Just spent the last 45 minutes or so reading your blog, after MSN highlighted it. I laughed out loud, and will have to share this with my cycling buddies. We’re a group of aging (50s to 70s) riders who ride for enjoyment and health in the Denver area.

  23. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 4:39 am

I see a landslide victory approaching.

I have just spent the last 45 minutes at work reading your blog for the first time – I have never had so much trouble hiding mirth from my coleagues! Thank you for such a great blog, and the bribes are working too – I voted! Good Luck! Bethany

  30. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 10:56 am

you’ll always have my vote, fatty

  31. Comment by allan | 03.29.2006 | 12:07 pm

Wow. This must be a record for comments. Heck, even I’ve left 3. Anyway, on a totally unrelated note, have you ever thought about doing a race like The Trans-Roclies Challenge? I’ve been feeling like I want to find a partner and try this race in 07 and wanted your opinion on it. You being my guru on ultra-endurance racing and all.

  32. Comment by Josh | 03.29.2006 | 12:07 pm

This is my first time reading and I am hooked already.  You definitely have my vote.

  33. Comment by allan | 03.29.2006 | 12:07 pm

Trans-Rockies I mean. Man, I cannot spell today.

  34. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 12:21 pm

I’ve been a big fan for a while and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to vote and help you win a well deserved "contest". The bribery didn’t influence my decision at all. Nope. Not me.

  35. Comment by Azriel | 03.29.2006 | 12:25 pm

Done.Only thing I don’t get is how I promote you by voting for the "Greener Pastures" space???ha! I kill me!Of course I voted for you, but please don’t pick me. I live overseas and don’t want to pick up the tab for all that cool stuff… besides, being a foreigner, and all that, I probably don’t even speak English… and won’t be able to enjoy the movie…Azriel

  36. Comment by strollerguy | 03.29.2006 | 12:33 pm

I wasn’t even paying attention to this until the Mayor chimed in. I knew that he won recently, and I remember seeing your Space so honored when I first "signed" on.

In this case, "New York abstains kindly." I wish all of you the best of luck being king of…ummmm…president of….ummmm….top dog…er…uh…well, you know.

(On the off chance that you actually ARE giving stuff away, please leave me out should I be drawn. Got enough crap already. "Never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse.")

    Sign me "Fat Runner?"

  37. Comment by Chris | 03.29.2006 | 12:53 pm

Fat cyclist?  I doubt it.  I’ve never met a cyclist or any other fitness nut that was fat.  Maybe super-musclular…it’s all about BMI, baby.
I’ll vote for ya’, free stuff or no free stuff.

  38. Comment by BRUCE | 03.29.2006 | 1:04 pm

Just voted for you and you’re not last anymore!  Looks like your rewards scheme is working for you.

  39. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 1:36 pm

Well, I voted for you and sent you an email. But then I decided to just sell my soul… errr… sign up for an MSN account anyway, just to make sure my voting for you got registered for your give away. As I said, I’m greedy, greedy, greedy.

  40. Comment by mary | 03.29.2006 | 3:03 pm

As i’m sure you already know, your blog is blowing everyone out of the water. And being the frugal consumer that I am, there was no way I would pass up a Banjo Brothers messenger bag.

  41. Comment by SHARON | 03.29.2006 | 3:30 pm

This my 1st "blog" ever to have read…  I thoroughly enjoyed it and will update frequently.  It’s a very entertaining "soapera-ish"" wave of the future.  This writer is fun, funny and witty.  I look forward to your additions. You’ve got my vote!

P.S…  I like granite counter tops too. Good luck with the move.

  42. Comment by Stephen | 03.29.2006 | 3:33 pm

My vote brings it to 48%, not bad!

  43. Comment by Cassie | 03.29.2006 | 3:40 pm

I don’t need to win anything, but I hope you get your bragging rights.  Good luck on the house, too!

  44. Comment by Cassie | 03.29.2006 | 3:41 pm

Um… I would like one of those pocket bags, though. :)

  45. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 3:44 pm

We love you, Fatty.  Those other schmucks don’t stand a chance.

    Now about those prizes . . .

Since Eddy races to Roubaix, and most certainly not Nice, in "A Sunday in Hell" I take it you haven’t actually watched that DVD.  Oh for shame!

  46. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 4:00 pm

I just voted – looks like your kicking ass.
Remember, as in Chicago politics, Vote Early, Vote Often.

  48. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 4:13 pm

    Hey fatty,
Just voted for you. You are schorching them. Isn’t America wonderful? You can buy anything.
Good to see you posting regularly again.

  50. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 5:25 pm

  51. Comment by Miami Studio | 03.29.2006 | 5:28 pm

I voted!  You’re in First Place!! Congrats!!!

I’m a first time reader and I love the blog!  Keep on writing!

  52. Comment by Savvas | 03.29.2006 | 5:30 pm

It looks like you’ve covered a lot of lost space there! The fight between fatcyclist and that Gela… whatever is on! Hope you don’t get disqualified for illegal boosting of your "performance"

  53. Comment by Scott | 03.29.2006 | 6:48 pm

Holy crap, Fatman!  That is a lot of comments.  I don’t think I have 121 comments in all of my blog posts, let along from one.
Of course I voted for you. And that must have been the one to push you into first place with nearly 50% of the vote.

  54. Comment by Robert | 03.29.2006 | 7:17 pm

I voted for you, but not without serious internal debate. It turns out that I can be bought. I better get a bag out of this.

  55. Comment by Greg | 03.29.2006 | 7:25 pm

I voted for you because I figured if you have the guts enough to flat out ask for votes then why not…also the possibility of winning stuff doesn’t hurt either.

  56. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 8:27 pm

    Kick butt, Fatty!

I voted for you and then noticed, hey, you’re already one of the featured pages on MSN’s What’s Your Story page!  "The legend is back!"   Whoohooo!   I miss your regular posts and will be glad when you get all settled into your new digs…

Now, send me some free stuff!  Yeah!

  57. Comment by John | 03.29.2006 | 9:14 pm

    Voted for you!

I am really a fat cyclist.  a true fatty.  5′5" 200lbs.  I would cycle more but my butt hurts.  I’t wouldn’t hurt so much if I wasn’t so fat.  A real conundrum.

  58. Comment by Jeff | 03.29.2006 | 10:02 pm

Wow, Fatty you’re at 50.5% and clearly ahead of all those non-cycling bloggers.

  59. Comment by Scott | 03.29.2006 | 10:13 pm

Looks like you’re gonna make it! As a fellow fatty, you’re an inspiration. Maybe after I read more of your blog, I’ll get back on the bike or, better yet, compete in a <yuck> triathlon!

  60. Comment by Jonathan | 03.29.2006 | 10:16 pm

congrats on being on the front page of msn.com!!!!!!!!!! that takes talent. i to am a biker. and i want some free stuff! free is good!

  61. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 10:16 pm

I think your ploy worked for getting votes….then again perhaps it was that your made me laugh the most.

What’s all that white stuff on the ground in front of the house?  Could it be snow?  Are you going to bike in the snow?  I guess I can’t say a thing because I have been known to bike in 118 degree weather so oh well.

  62. Comment by John | 03.29.2006 | 10:17 pm

OK, I’ll bite – hey, gear is gear and I’m local so you don’t even have
to ship!  I voted (yes, for you).  And I’m glad you’re
posting again, because I miss my "Fatty Fix" when you stop.  Way
to go for the epic commute – mine is much less epic, and I still bus
much to most of it, most of the year.

  63. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 10:41 pm

Okay, you got me.  Not sure if the others are bribing voters, but hey, honestly, I don’t care if they are.    Huh, I wondering what I can get out of them for a vote… no… I don’t care… really… it won’t hurt to peak… no!
Good to see you posting again…  Good luck!
This reminds me, it’s time to starting biking to/from work again… oh, and the wife probably wants me to go looking at some open houses again… sigh…

  64. Comment by Chris | 03.29.2006 | 10:44 pm

I am a sucker… and you are winning as I just placed
my vote but I have to tell you I think it will be a hollow victory
having had to resort to bribery. But be that as it may I have
contributed to your delinquency and voted (for you no less).

    Chris

  65. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 10:53 pm

And after volunteering to work for two cycling events, two weekends in a row, I shamelessly am begging (ok, just hoping to be randomly drawn)  for some schwag because I’m tired of giving away all the cool stuff to everyone else.  Oh, and I really, really, enjoy reading your blog.

Lucky enough to live near the yellow jersey-wearing phenom, even used to see him here at local races in the dirt.  My brush with greatness!   However, no where near the elevation at your new casa, good luck with the new house.

  66. Comment by Ashley | 03.29.2006 | 10:54 pm

Hey Fatty, have you ever been biking in the Tetons? As in, the Grand Tetons? Because that’s where I’m from, and up here in Teton Valley, Idaho, my family owns& operates a bed & breakfast right in front of the Tetons! If you give me the 1st prize, I’ll give you a free night’s stay at  Teton Sunrise Inn Bed&Breakfast! Check out or website:www.tetonsunrise.com!

  67. Comment by Wondering Rahab | 03.29.2006 | 10:56 pm

Shame, shame on you for bribing.

  68. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 11:10 pm

Just voted for you and saw you had 53.8% of the votes so far.  Slam dunk.  Congrats on the new house.  We will need to get out and ride the Alpine loop when you come back to Utah.

  69. Comment by Paul | 03.29.2006 | 11:19 pm

I think you’re still in the lead! Boy, I could sure use Powerpoint from that version of MS Office 2003…

  70. Comment by Melanie | 03.29.2006 | 11:26 pm

well bribery always wins my vote….and apparently alot of other peoples too…your in first..as if you didn’t already know!  Here is my Bribe..if I win all that great stuff you have graciously donated I will pay my own shipping fee…it’s the least I could do.  Your site is amusing, I just started swimming because I was sick of torchering my body with running on the treadmill…I guess I should look into biking.  Goodluck!

  71. Comment by Reena | 03.29.2006 | 11:46 pm

I totally voted for your blog.  Loved it.  and I forwarded the link to my workout partner and best friend who just signed up for a Triathalon.  Now he’ll love it too!

Although I sincerely do love swimming I totally see it from the germaphobe perspective….it’s absolutely disgusting.  I wanted to bathe my entire body in a vat of Purell after reading that.

  72. Comment by Unknown | 03.29.2006 | 11:53 pm

long time reader, first poster. you got my vote, for sure.

  73. Comment by Perry | 03.29.2006 | 11:58 pm

Im not one to read blogs that much, but I started reading yours and before long I was at the bottom of the page.  Enjoy your writing so I had to give you my vote.  And I’ll be back.

  74. Comment by Unknown | 03.30.2006 | 12:00 am

It’s not about the free stuff. ;)

  75. Comment by Linda | 03.30.2006 | 12:06 am

Voted for you!  I am enjoying your blog as I am also a "fat cyclist"!  Keep on riding!

  76. Comment by Mendi | 03.30.2006 | 12:06 am

You’re writing is great – and hilarious!  I enjoyed it.  Good luck on winning!  I can’t wait to see if you get the house.  But I’ll have to agree with your wife – granite countertops ROCK!

  77. Comment by Felicity | 03.30.2006 | 12:10 am

Hey Fatty… If I could vote twice I would. Loved the bit on triathlons. Keep up the good blogging. You inspire me to get back on my bike and cycle the 17km to and from work (well maybe more just from work back home).

  78. Comment by Eric | 03.30.2006 | 12:20 am

Great Space! I am reminded of my own journey to pick up cycling, having tried a variety of "sports" to lose weight and improve my conditioning/health.  Although just beginning, the only sport I truly enjoy is biking/cycling. You have inspired me to continue. And hey - your writing is fine – I enjoyed the read and got a couple of laughs.  Keep it up – please.

  79. Comment by Uncle | 03.30.2006 | 12:29 am

    Rememeber: you’re not fat…you’re a sprinter!

Picked the biking habit up again last year…hadn’t been able to ride for about 14 years after I blew out my knee riding across the state of Iowa.  Now, I can’t get enough again, but I’m shocked by how much the tech has changed in the time! Bikes are really different, as is the gear.  And I can’t get enough.

    Voted for you, btw.

  80. Comment by Kayla | 03.30.2006 | 12:36 am

I have way too much time on my hands…

I did vote for you, but to be impartial I tried to read the others.  Yours was the only one that kept my attention…Right on!

Free stuff! Oh boy!!! I’ll never win. I do not receive free stuff. Anyway, good luck on this thing here…I understand competition for competition’s sake.
I came around just by random chance. As it happens I too am a biker who regards himself as fat but who is constantly hearing "You’re not fat." Don’t care. I like riding. I like trying to keep myself in shape.
See you out on the trails.

I voted for you, so stop knockin’ the tri-geeks. I’m a mechanic and those nuts ( I mean athletes) keep me in the $$$. They sure know how not to maintain a bike. More work for me!!!

Well I voted for you too because my daughter told me to do so. The only reason I was able to vote and notify you, however, is because I had to register with MSN to respond to my daughter’s blog. So there. I voted for you but you really owe my daughter. Of course, if you send her a gift, I will wrestle for it (I am bigger than she is).

Admitting my craving for more readers was the first of many steps
towards not wrting in my old blog any longer…mostly because despite
the craving the readers never developed.  looks like you’re having
    a very different expereince.
I did get bragging rights by dragging my fat self to the top of a climb
ahead of a pack of other less-fat riders this past Sunday…

I voted for you.  Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.  At last count, you had something like 57% of the votes!  You’re going to lose everything and have nothing to move, you lucky contest creator!

If I could vote for you again, I might.  You are kind of addictive, like your (in)famous Best Cake in the World.  I made the cake, and took it to our local bike club’s January 1 Chilli Ride and after- ride party.  (Yes, "Chilli Ride" is spelled correctly.)

Needless to say, the cake was scarfed down so well that the host didn’t even have to wash the pan before returning it to me.

I went into withdrawl when you failed to post for a few days.

What am I going to do when you shut down for the actual move?

Ride my bike, I guess.  Or maybe, view a bike video.

I voted for you, and you now have 55%+ of the vote.

You are blowing the other people out of the water.  I hope you feel good about yourself now.

I voted for you.  The real prize I want is to interview you for the bicycling newspaper I publish, Cycling Utah.  I have two reasons for wanting to do this:  You are infamous (excuse me, I meant famous), and you are moving to Utah.  Besides, I expect an interview with you to double the demand for Cycling Utah, and I will be able to charge a whole lot more for advertising.

Good luck to you! I enjoyed reading some of  your blogs :)

Congratulations on your being nominated #1 Space.  I voted for you because I love your space.  However, I’ll certainly take the free stuff if I’m a winner, too!

PS:  I don’t know if the photo on MSN’s home page Wednesday was actually you, but the one for Gelati Farms was most definitely not  them!  Why is it that the Powers-That-Be always seem to think that they must use models instead of the actual people?  I look at the people representing Gelati Farms on MSN’s "What’s Your Story?" page and can only conclude that it’s no wonder we’re a nation obsessed with how we appear.  This is a classic example of media imaging telling us what a young family is ’supposed’ to look like.  It’s no wonder so many have complexes about how we look!

    Dave of Cycling Utah!

How’s it going! You never came to visit me in Alaska. I was bummed, really. Hope you had a good time in Seward. Good luck with the interview.

Well, I finally voted after a long, highly traumatic deliberation process. This is my first experience with the msn spaces weekly vote — is it always this dramatic?

To summarize: I came across the fatcyclist blog on the MSN home page and started reading it. I came across the contest and thought, "Hey, I need Office 2003 — I think I’ll vote." Then I read the King’s post and felt completely ashamed of myself for almost selling out in a lame attempt to win — somebody else’s clutter no less.

Now riddled with guilt, I read all the blogs, determined to support my actual favorite. Although the others were worthy adversaries, in the end, I really did like fatcyclist the best. So I was able to vote for you, enter the contest AND maintain a squeaky-clean guilt-free conscience. (What’s more, I haven’t been able to log in to my .NET Passport account in months, and now here I am — I mean, is this meant to be or what???)

Note: My blog is not actually online yet, but reading yours has motivated me to get going with it. It should be posted soon…
