Pink Fat Cyclist Jerseys Now Available to Order (And So Is Some Other Stuff, Too)!
A few weeks ago, I asked if any of you would be interested in a special pink edition of the Fat Cyclist jersey to support Susan in her fight against cancer.
More than 500 of you said you are.
Frankly, the hugeness of that response continues to overwhelm Susan. And me.
Anyway, the design geniuses at Twin Six got to work. They took the design for the original jersey, and made a few tweaks:
- It’s pink. Duh.
- The logo text has changed. On the back, above the big clydesdale, it now says “TEAM FATTY“. Below the clydesdale, it now says, “FIGHTING FOR SUSAN“.
- The right sleeve says “WIN”. It’s the ultimate objective, and this is the ultimate race.
- New message behind the center pocket. It’s Susan’s To-Do list:
I tell you what: I love this jersey and what it represents. Susan, on the other hand, is a little bit embarassed by all the attention. I figure she may as well get used to it, though.
OK, OK, Let’s See the Jersey Already
And so now, here’s the new Fat Cyclist Pink jersey, ready to order now.
Front….
…and back…
Something for the Ladies
Not surprisingly at all, the interest in women’s sizing on the jersey was high — about a third of you asked for women’s sizing, in fact. So Twin Six did it:
Women’s jersey front…
Who Gets What
I need to take a moment and talk about the guys — Ryan Carlson and Brent Gale — at Twin Six. They are two guys with a very obvious idea nobody else seems to have thought of: make bike jerseys that actually look cool. It’s their business. Their living.
But when they approached me about doing a special pink edition of the jersey, they were absolutely clear on one thing: they would not take a single dime for their work. They’re doing the design, the order handling, and the fulfillment, for no money whatsoever.
I mean, seriously. That’s just dumb. And also generous beyond comprehension.
So when you order a pink jersey, where will the money go? We’re going to split it evenly, three ways:
- Treatment: Copays, deductibles, and possibly expenses for traveling for clinical trials. It all adds up.
- LiveStrong: As I’ve recently mentioned, I’m now a big fan of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. They’ve helped us, and now I want to give back. When you buy a pink Fat Cyclist jersey, a third of the net goes to the LiveStrong foundation.
- A Trip to Italy: When Susan’s ready to go, I’m taking her on a vacation to Italy. And if you buy a jersey, in a sense you’re taking her, too. Which is not to say that you’re invited to come along.
When Will the Jerseys Arrive?
This is the great thing. Instead of having to wait for four months for these jerseys to arrive, the Twin Six guys have managed to do some serious line-cutting; these jerseys will be arriving before the end of June. Yeah, that’s right. This month.
So guess what I’ll be wearing at Leadville this year.
But Wait, There’s More! In Fact, Quite a Bit More
Once you get those Twin Six guys started, they just don’t quit. Which is to say, you can now also order:
Socks: You can get black and orange socks or black and pink socks to go with whichever jersey you like. These will be arriving next week.
The Fat Cyclist T-Shirt: I personally intend to order five of these, and never wear any other shirt ever again. I think you should do the same. Check it out:
…and back…
Sexy. Very sexy.
Big Thanks
And now for a non-jersey-related note.
I’ve been pretty scared of what this week would bring. I was worried that once Susan’s chemo started, she’d be sick non-stop, and that that would be what we’d have to look forward to for pretty much ever.
The overwhelmingly huge number and quality of cards and positive comments, thoughts, and prayers you have sent our way have played a big part in getting us to and through this first round.
Now it’s Friday — three days after the chemo — and Susan hasn’t had an especially bad reaction to it. She’s doing OK. Which means I’m doing great.
Thanks, everyone, for being so good about this blog going from extremely goofy all the time to kinda serious some of the time. Your support has made a big difference in how well I’m coping with all this.

Glad to hear that Susan did OK in chemo. Love the check-list! :-)
QUESTION: Do you have an ETA on an orange jersey destined for the UK ? I’d like to try mine on before I order my pink one.
How long will the order book stay open – I’ll take a punt on the sizer rather than miss out.

NOTE TO TWIN SIX: Guys, you need to provide sizing info for your ladies jersies!
OK, I’m done here today…the weekend has started!

Love the jersey (just ordered mine)! Love the to-do list. Especially love the way you have decided to split the profits. Very appropriate. Ryan, Brent, and all the people at Twin Six, thanks for your generosity to the Phat Fatty Family. Susan, your jersey will be worn proudly on the roads of Indiana. I’m looking forward to hearing about when you complete the last task on your to-do list. Love to you and your family!

The division profit is perfect (sorry, I tend to look at the pictures, get all excited, then read the important stuff) and the Twin Six involvement is an outstanding contribution!

Fatty and Susan, I keep trying to find something to say. I type a few lines and delete them… I wipe my eyes and try again. And then I close my lap top and look at a few old photos. I think about the rollercoaster each of you are riding and wish I could share some words to help make the ride smoother, but in reality I have none. In 1998 my wife lost the battle with breast cancer, I lost my riding partner, my best friend, and my hero.
Susan and Fatty, I’ll wear my Pink Lemonade jersey with pride and think about the two of you enjoying Italy.

Just ordered one… can’t wait to wear it, hopefully at Leadville! Plans are a little bit in flux right now — I may end up on the John Muir Trail that weekend — but if I’m there, I’ll be psyched to see you break 9 hours. And to see Susan there supporting you.
Also I can’t wait to use a Sharpie on my new jersey to manually mark off the “Recover” and “ITALY” checkboxes.
Finally, I saw somebody wearing a Fat Cyclist jersey at the Spokane 24 hour race last weekend. Anybody you know?

I’m definitely in for the pink. However I too would like to try my orange one for size first just to be sure. Posting to Oz etc will be a pain if I get the size wrong. I truly love the adjustments and Sue’s to do list – excellent.

The “Biker Babes” here in Grand Junction, Colorado will wear the pink jerseys proudly and with a smile!
It will go nicely with my new pink blinging sunglasses , pink mountain bike, pink gloves…
I am proud to be Fatty’s sister and so proud of Susan for fighting the fight!

The Pink Jersey Rocks!!! Normally, when I get a Jersey for a great cause, they are pretty ugly. I look at my florescent Yellow Team in Trainng Jersey with the Green Cuffs and cringe but I wear it proudly. Now not only do I get to wear a cool Jersey but I get to support you…which is the ultimate goal. Thanks Twin Six!!

Yay! I’ve ordered mine…if the small doesn’t fit, it’ll just be one more motivation to become a less fat cyclist!

It’s good to hear the chemo is going so well! I know three people going through the same thing right now…I know you are all going to win this battle!

Just ordered the pink jersey. Yay for women’s sizes! But if truth be told, I’d much rather NOT be ordering a pink jersey. My mother is also battling breast cancer that has spread to her bones and liver, so I have an idea of what she (and your family) is going through. Whether you know it or not (or intend it to be or not), you and Susan are an inspiration to quite a few people. You guys are showing us mere mortals how to handle one of the worst things that can get thrown at you with grace and dignity. But then, most hero’s don’t intend to be hero’s, they just are.

I saw that the ordering was live before this post went up. Placed an order this morning for a pink lemonade jersey for myself, my wife, my brother, and a friend and got a t-shirt to boot. Will be encouraging others to order as well.
I would really love to ride Leadville this year sporting pink lemonade. Anyone know of a way to get in now even though registration has been over a few months? No way I’ll break nine hours, but I am very motivated to train hard and represent the fat members of team fatty this year.

Kudos to Twin Six for really putting the money where their intentions are. Lots of companies like to say they’re giving profit to breast cancer causes when you, say, buy a pink mixer or a pink teddy bear, but usually they give a teeny, tiny percent and still take lots of profit. Twin Six is clearly not that company. And although I almost never buy pink, I just submitted an all pink order — all for a very good cause. Well, maybe not all; it is a sweet looking jersey, too!

Wow! Great jersey. I ordered my women’s jersey based on the t-shirt sizes and the reported email replies I read from previous buyers (thanks, ladies!). And using a Sharpie to check of Susan’s checklist is a marvelous idea. As is the donation to the LAF (yeah, I’ve been wearing a yellow wristband for years).

Susan & Fatty,
Glad to hear the first round of chemo went well — I remember what a relief that was for us when my wife was getting treatments a couple of years ago. Am anxiously awaiting the pink jersey I just ordered, and will be wearing it with pride as I train for the Pan Mass Challenge (fund raiser for the cancer institute here where she was treated).
Thinking of you guys,

Ordering my pink jersey now. Susan, if you have never been to Italy, you will really enjoy it. My Tuscan vacation 2 years ago was the best vacation ever! We stayed in a 300 year old renovated farmhouse surrounded by 90 acres of olive groves and vineyards. The morning cappuccino under the chestnut tree overlooking the valley below was the best part of the day. Then, of course, there are all those hot Italian men….yum. Sorry Fatty. Just wanted to give Susan a little more incentive to get over all that chemo stuff so she can go to Italy. :-)
Got my orange FC jersey today (or was it yesterday?). Looks great and fits perfectly.

I used to come here to get teh funny and to be teh funny. It’s a nice escape from my job, the burdens of which have, quite frankly, driven me to bicycle riding, racing, and gray hair, in short order. Then things took a turn for the serious, which was pretty grave. But then I noticed that I come here and sometimes there’s teh funny, but a lot of times when it’s serious it’s teh uplifting instead of teh funny. So even though the topics are kind of grim, life’s non-trivial problems are dealt with in a ridiculously positive way. Good grief, what a ridiculously supportive group of people you have around here, Elden…
So I still come away feeling good, but in a different kind of way than I used to. What a nice little place on the web this is… kind of like a diner, but the patrons all have really good looking legs.
Comment by Dave | 06.1.2007 | 6:40 pm
Hey Fatty, I can’t tell you how excited I was when I got home from work last night to find a package from you sitting on my doorstep. (I thought this was a little careless of the postal service, knowing the contents of the package) I was just beside myself. I proudly wore the jersey on my morning ride, thinking life cannot get better. Then it did when I opened the site this morning. I just ordered a pink lemonade jersey and socks, plus orange socks and a t-shirt. We will be the talk of the town. Thanks to the T6 guys for a great jersey and a kind gesture and we are glad to contribute in what small way we can. We’ll keep praying.

Not to be left out, I just dropped an order for a couple of pinks, a couple of oranges, a couple of pairs of socks, and a t-shirt and twin six stickers to round out the package. At this rate the LAF will have enough money to treat everyone in America and Susan will take a private jet to Italy.
There’s this couple who are fellow TDF-watching zealots who, last year in celebration of the start of the 23 days in July, presented me with several TDF/cycling inspired gifts. This year I will return the favor with various bits of FC regalia. The female of the couple is a physician who specializes in palliative medicine and pain management who has a particular interest in oncology. They should love this stuff.

Comment by Caren | 06.3.2007 | 3:41 am
I ordered my Pink Lemonade jersey as soon as I saw they were available – actually I had to go back to the TwinSix page a couple of times until they got it working. I decided to order even though they didn’t have the women’s sizing available – I just couldn’t wait. TwinSix did an AWESOME job – you guys ROCK!!!
Then I just about pee’d my pants when my husband called and said I had a package from the Fat Cyclist! I could not wait to get home to open it and try on my new jersey and check out the other bling! After trying on the jersey I told me husband that maybe I’d share it! But he might have to wait until I got my Pink Lemonade jersey! Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to wear my jersey while riding my bike for several weeks due to being out of town – so wearing it around the house and in my mind will have to due until my next opportunity to be out on the bike!
It is great to hear that Susan and the Chemo are getting along so far. Here’s to hoping that continues! We will keep sending green chile karma from New Mexico!
It looks like from several of the posts that there may be quite the Team FC at Leadville! I’ve also got it marked on my calendar! I thought that might provide additional inspiration if Fatty were to be coming down the road and see a FC jersey hanging out and cheering him on! And it would awesome to see Susan out there too!
Keep believing!

I just ordered my pink lemonade jersey and sock set today.
Susan, a good friend of mine put me back on track when I told her the news I maybe facing chemo as well as radiation for breast cancer prevention. She said to focus on the outcome and not the process. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me.
By the way, thanks for listening to the requests for the XXL women’s jerseys :). I would have bought a men’s, otherwise.
See you back on the road, soon.

Just ordered my Pink despite the fact it clashes terribly with my bike.
Plan on wearing it in the HopeOnWheels100 in Sept. See: how100.org

Let’s say someone–ahem–is not yet a cyclist. But they ordered the pink lemonade jersey because it’s such a great cause and it’s so irresistibly COOL. Does anyone ever wear these things when they’re not on a bike?
Comment by Yukirin Boy | 06.3.2007 | 7:38 pm
Ordered a Pink jersey size XL. And a fabulous T-shirt too.
Look forward to wearing it soon and showing support for Susan and FC too.
What are the chances of me seeing another FC Jersey in Japan?
Comment by fatty | 06.3.2007 | 7:45 pm
yukirin – not sure of the chances, but there will be at least 2 other fat cyclist jerseys there besides your own (not counting any the twin six guys have sold; i don’t have info on that).
mehera – i’ve got two sisters who wear them for running. and a coworker who swears it makes a good tv-watching jersey.
Comment by JET(not a nickname) | 06.3.2007 | 10:05 pm
I’ve worn bike jerseys while hiking before. For quick day trips away from the campsite, they rock because of the pockets in the back which can hold a few snacks and some sandwiches as well.
Comment by Born4Lycra | 06.3.2007 | 11:27 pm
Mehera I wear Lycra all the time – hence the name. Had not even thought you may have to restrict the times and situations when you wear it.
What is the world coming too – only the other day I discovered that the tops and bottoms should match and now there is the thought they should not clash with the bike.
FC – how many tops (orange) have you sold? -

Just ordered a pink jersey and hope to get it in time for my 24 hour race in Denmark.
Fatty, I think about you and your family a lot when I am riding, this may sound cheesy, but you are an inspiration to me that you keep functioning on all levels, finding time to ride, blog and look after yourn family through all of this. I have no idea what you are going through, but the fact that you keep on going is a huge achievement in itself. Have a pizza in the sun – you’ll have earned it!

Sounds to me like a great reason to go ahead and get on a bike…

Not sure if everyone is getting the same google Ads as me, but is there some irony in the fact that all the ads on this entry are for other clothing suppliers!
Comment by Mehera | 06.4.2007 | 6:07 am
:-) I live 30 miles south of Leadville. Maybe I’ll wear it to come cheer you all on. Especially since Fatty has tutored us on what to yell.

Hey there. I just found you through the great Up in Alaska blog. Ordered a pink jersey which will soon be riding in Brooklyn, NY and up and down the Eastern Seaboard all summer long.
A l’Italia!
Comment by Sprocketboy | 06.4.2007 | 6:56 am
I have ordered my pink lemonade jersey as well. I am glad to read that women are ordering them as well; I would have thought that some women would be put off by the suggestion that they were fat cyclists!
I will look even sexier than Red Green when I wear this jersey. It is guaranteed.
Comment by Erin | 06.4.2007 | 8:05 am
yay! i am flush with pinkness.*
the shirts are fly, but same problem applies: if you’re larger than a B cup, men’s shirts look absurd.
*that didn’t sound so weird in my head.

No Sleep ‘Till I Get My Jersey In BROOKLYN!!
I can’t wait to rock this pretty little pink frock while running through the mean streets of NYC. I got two pairs of socks as my son enjoys wearing my socks as thigh-highs – yes, this will be a family-wide fashion trend, to be sure.
Lovely. Truly the best community on the innernet.
XOXOXOXO and one more for luck to Susan, XO

Fatty and Susan: After reading about the journey you are both on I could hardly wait to order the pink jersey. Take care and we will be thinking about you.
Comment by Rachael | 06.4.2007 | 11:06 am
Thanks for the pink jersey. Brought tears to my eyes to order one..and will wear with pride. To know that Susan clearly has a partner in crime who loves her so intensely.. well its encouraging to know that such marriages exist.
(I am sure that is somewhat compansates for the weight /gear obsession, ‘how near to death was I’ crash storys, training rides, burgeoning bike collection, obscure long assed races in the middle of nowhere, etc etc. )
Comment by JRes@TeamOptimistic | 06.4.2007 | 1:15 pm
My husband and I will both be wearing our pink fat cyclist jerseys with matching socks all around So Cal. Fatty- I hope you will not be offended when we go all pink and fat at our next triathlon! Yet another use for the cycling jersey!!
My grandpa is currently healing from radiation and a second breast removal (he first underwent treatment 13 years ago, and then found a lump in his remaining man boob). What he has taught me is that a positive outlook does a whole lot more than you would think (but he is completely crazy, so staying positive about his health while making fun of everyone around him for his entertainment seems to work even better). Enjoy Italy!!

Got two, one for me, one for the missus. Didn’t order the FC one cuz, well, um, don’t like it…oh SHOOT!! Did I bring everyone down with that?? Well get over it! Course the purpose of the new one alone is enough, but hey!! It is SO much better looking than yours FC. Of course it takes a manly man such as myself to be comfortable in pink, might not be for the wussies like Al on the board, but it will go great with my three red bikes, road rash, and permanently bloodshot eyes.
Mehera-you can wear it backwards and get a job selling peanuts at the local baseball park. You’d be amazed at how much you can stuff in those pockets.
And finally an important topic–I used to hover around a NYT hockey board a few years ago. THe site would regularly malfuction and multiple post. THe members called a multiple post an Azspritzen (might be off on the spelling) after the member would it would happen to the most. I hereby propose multiple posts be called azspritzen from now on. That way at the very least, we don’t have to read another post apologizing for the previous posts, the next writer can just say “nice azspritzen” and we can all move on. Do I add value or what??

So do I understand that right, if I am a 10/12 on womens, that would be an XXL??
if 2-4=S, 4-6=M, 6-8=L, 8-10=XL and 10-12=XXL
That sounds weird. I emailed Twin Six again to make sure and will let you know!
I definitely want to order one of the pink jerseys and would love to by the women’s cut. Just want to make sure that I order the right size.
Maybe some of you Chicas can give me a feedback if you have gotten yours yet.
Gods speed to both of you Susan and Fatty. I heard about your blog through Jill’s (Up in Alaska) I live in Omaha, Ne but I am originally from Germany.
I MTB and race XC and I would love to wear one of your jerseys on our trails:)

I’ve ordered my pink jersey, and I’m neither a cyclist nor fat. Though I’m working on changing that. The cyclist part. Explaining to my wife why I bought a pink cycling jersey took a little time. I didn’t realize just what a background story there is until I started explaining it. But it is a great story about an amazing couple and a truly excellent community that has pulled together around them!
Here’s wishing Susan, Fatty, and your family all the best!

VeloCC — I think for 10-12, you’d be getting XL. I am an 8 and ordered a large. Look at their t-shirt sizing. It sounds like from previous posts that you can trust the jersey and t-shirt sizing should be the same. Of course, I don’t yet have a jersey and am purely being optimistic that I made the right guess.

I actually went to a local bike shop today and tried on a twin six jersey and I am a L. I have been riding more and loosing some of my “layers”:) As you can see on my blog, I am not a skinny girl…but I will still order one FAT jersey:)

Love the jersey! I was diagnosed 12/5/05 with intrusive ductal carcinoma, 12/14/05 both breasts were removed, 1/06 Chemo began, 5/06 reconstruction began, 1/07 cancer got the beating it deserved!
Keep up the good work, keep a positive attitude, and Never! NEVER! Give UP!
Comment by Bob Hearn | 06.10.2007 | 1:59 pm
Hi Fatty & Susan.
I’ve just submitted my order for the jersey and socks and am really looking forward to wearing them. Twin Six did a great job with design. Definitely something I’ll be proud to wear.
I’m going to be riding El Tour De Tucson later this year to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I have a Dedications section on my fund raising page and I’ve added Susan as one of the people I’m dedicating the ride to. I hope you don’t mind. Take a look at http://www.active.com/donate/tntscfl/BobHearn.
Denise Newcomb got it right when she said “keep a positive attitude, and Never! NEVER! Give UP! “

PINK! I love pink, how come knowone told me :-). I am ordering one today! As for you Fatty, wow I have meet few men in my life who hold themselves as well as you in the face of life and death. Please send Susan “All my Power!” during this time. And for you how does a Fat man like you climb so well. Holy Crap!

DOH! I’ve been so busy, I haven’t checked back here in about 3 weeks… much to my chagrin. I just ordered 2 Pink Lemonade jersey’s (one for me and one for the wife), 2 pairs of pink socks (me & wife), 2 pairs FC socks and 1 of the FC T-shirts. I love the stuff the guys at twin six make, and it’s some of the nicest, most comfortable biking gear I own. Most importantly, I want the scratch to benefit Susan and all the other cancer fighters (my dad is one of em). Eldon, Everytime I ride my MTB, I think of you and Susan and I say little prayers between gasps for air.
On my ride to Burning Man this year (wait, did I already mention this?) that I’m dedicating the Carson Pass section of the trip to Susan (I’m riding the Adventure Cycling Association’s Western Express route), and the day I summit (assuming I get the jersey in time), I’ll be wearing my Pink Lemonade jersey. My dad is currently fighting with liver cancer and he is on Chemo as well… it’s hard for me to watch, but a lot harder for him. I know what you guys are going through and my heart is with you all. I’m also wearing my LiveStrong wrist band again all the time.. I finally understand what it means. Live Strong Susan.

Glad to hear Susan is doing great. Thats fantastic!!
Keep in mind when praising Lance in that he was quoted as saying,”I hate when people say Praise God for my healing. God had nothing to do with it. Nothing! It was my strength, and my resolve to beat this thing. God had nothing to do with it.” He has a great charity going, but he is waayyyy lost.
