What’s the biking equivalent of being in a tiny little indy rock band and waking up one morning to find that you’re on the cover of Rolling Stone?

This is:

And inside (click for larger image):

Thanks, Bicycling Magazine. This means a lot to me, to Susan, and to the guys at Twin Six.

To tell the truth, I’m not precisely sure how this happened. I know that the guys at Twin Six sent a press release telling cycling publications about the pink “WIN” jersey, and that Bicycling Magazine replied asking for one, saying they might cover it. But neither Twin Six nor I had any idea that “cover it” meant they were actually going to put it on the cover.

You should have heard Ryan at Twin Six and me on the phone yesterday (yes, we both found out the way other Bicycling subscribers do — by getting our copies in the mail). We were giggling and saying “no way!” and stuff.

I believe it is safe to say that we were giddy.

PS: I’m going to email a nice “thank you” to Bicycling Magazine. If you’d like to let them know you think it’s pretty darn cool of them to feature the pink “WIN” jersey, send them email at bicycling@rodale.com. If you do email them, please do me a favor and don’t make it a “Thanks for the photo but you should have given the jersey more print coverage to go along with it” email. The amount of coverage they gave us is way, way beyond anything I ever expected and I for sure don’t want any backhanded compliments being sent their way. You cool with that? I thought so.

Dear God! That should take some of the sting out of the not-quite sub-nine, huh? Maybe you can get them to donate that C40 to Susan for her to ride when you’re in Italy! =)

I got home and my mag wasn’t there yet. Or maybe my mailman took it. Anyway, what a nice feather in your and Susan’s cap for all heart-ache and sacrafice you’ve gone thru to entertain us knuckle heads on a regular basis.
We all appreciate it more than you will know.

This is outstandingly cool. I’m wearing mine in a charity ride tomorrow just so I can look just like her.

ROCK ON! That’s awesome to see, you and Susan getting some major props. I’m still waitin’ to order mine, stuck in between two sizes like all of us big guys, it seems.

    Oh, you see this?

Just gave Bicycling some props via email. Nice to see that they still know there are people out there and not just high dollar rides and gear.

  12. Comment by TimK | 08.24.2007 | 6:36 am

I’m not caving on this one. I still have some left-over teenage got to be cool and unique blood in me here in my mid-30’s. So, when everybody started wearing the Livestrong bracelets (and all the derivative support the troops, etc) I retired mine. I was one of the originals, but there was no way to not look like I was just another trend follower.
Now that Bicycling has the FC jersey out there more people will start wearing them. I bet even non-bikers will wear them because they are just that cool. We’ll see Hollywooders and political candidates sporting them to show how cool they are and even more folks will wear them When people see me sporting my orange and black they’ll think I am just another follower. And this time I don’t care, I’m not caving. I will wear this jersey until it falls off (hopefully from age and not the way Kenny’s came off)
Viva Team Fatty! Viva Twin Six!

I think this is WAY COOL!!!

I think it’s amazing what happens when a little idea like “who wants to buy a jersey from my little blog” turns out to be such a HUGE success. This has got to deposit tons of good vibes into the emotional bank account for you and Susan.

You’re sure to get good things to come to your family because this jersey is for such a great cause.

    Hip, Hip, HURRAY!!!!!

Whoa! Fatty, this totally rocks!!! Ryan at Twin Six, if you’re reading this, YAHOO!

I wore my Pink Lemonade at the Vineride last weekend, and got lots of comments, mostly, “where can I buy one of those?”

I can’t wait to get my magazine in the mail! Any day now…. :) Won’t my sweet baboo be miffed that the jersey he was all lukewarm about made the cover of one of our favorite mags! :) Ha! Ha! And I say again, HA!

  21. Comment by Big Boned | 08.24.2007 | 8:13 am

Your sweet baboo? Let’s keep it “G” rated people!

Ooooh, that’s exciting! I’m sure that’s what I look like in mine. Only more manly. And less tan. And with shorter hair and a bit of a five o’clock shadow. And probably a lot more sweat, since she’s on an incline. Let me just start over.

Ooooh, that’s exciting! I hope we all look as happy as she does when we’re sporting the Pink Lemonade.

Congratualtions on 1. Being the kind of guy (and wife) that Bicycling would want to plug. 2. Being such a style maven that Bicycling magazine can’t help but put your latest on their cover.

  23. Comment by Al Maviva | 08.24.2007 | 8:48 am

Ordinarily, I hate Bicycling (AKA Editorialized Bike Ads’R'Us), and like Playboy, I only buy it for the pictures. But they deserve kudos for this uncharacteristic show of good taste and a good heart.

I’m still not changing my firm belief that in a Steel Cage Death Match, Velo News would beat Bicycling to within an inch of its miserable life, and that’s before an amped up Pez even has a chance to tag in and whack it over its uncomprehending head with a folding bicycle, and before Dirtrag has had a chance to run out to the pickup, get a shotgun, and come back in to administer the coop dee grace. Not only do I feel this way but as a bona fide purist and snob, I’m contractually obliged to dis Bicycling. So I’m really risking my street cred by even saying this, but if I see that Strickland guy at any rides (our riding territories overlap a bit) I’ll buy him a donut for sure*.

*Better yet, I may consider admitting in public that Bicycling usually has one good feature article each month. This edition features a good writeup on Saul Raisin, and the how-to on installing a new chain and changing out brake/derailleur cables is actually outstanding. So that’s like three reasons to buy it this month. Amazing. I may have to renew my subscription. Don’t tell anybody I subscribe, okay, and if you see it uncovered on my coffee table, just cover it with the Playboy, okay? Maybe if I do see Strickland I’ll ask him if they can do a special edition with a discrete brown paper cover…

Been wearing my orange & black for some time, just got the Pink Lemonade from 66 in the mail yeasterday. I was going to wait until payday to order it, but I forgot. Glad I did, I am sure there will be a run on them now!

I am saving the beautiful Pink Lemonade for my ride in the Portland LIVESTRONG Challenge.

Thanks so much to those on this board who have made a donation to honor Susan

    Steve

Off-Topic – I have been wondering about what is behind TwinSix as a company name. I watched Star Wars Episode 3 with the boys the other night, and noticed that the order sent out into all the galaxy from Darth Sidious to murder all Jedi was “Plan 66″, as in: “Execute Plan 66“. …just sayin’

  25. Comment by SpikeBlue | 08.24.2007 | 9:22 am

I’m not sure anything in bicycling could be cooler than having a specially designed pink jersey supporting your wife and touting your website on the cover of a national biking magazine. I would venture to say not even a sub 9 in leadville could top this! WTG (formerly known as) Fatty!

I hope you are figuring out how to frame the cover of the magazine!

  26. Comment by BotchedExperiment | 08.24.2007 | 9:43 am

As someone who has seen my father die of the disease it makes me happy to see people still out there and fighting to find a cure. Orbea Girl you used the term relegation so I knew you meant real Football. Altho I rather rudely assumed you meant an English Team (I’m in Australia by the way) and thought it might have been too much of a coincidence but my team AFC Bournemouth are in the same predicament. Good luck to Nice.

I just sent the editorial staff at Bicycling Magazine my “Thanks.” It was very thoughtful of them to feature the jersey. Now let’s hope that it pays off and the all the subscribers buy at least one jersey each. That would go a long way toward medical expenses and that trip to Italy!

I know just how you feel. So how come you support “The Cherries”? Incidentally, OGC Nice and AFCB also play in very similar strips: black and red stripes.

I’m originally from UK and my home team is Aston Villa where things are decidedly looking up since we got Martin O’Neil as a manager and a very wealthy US owner. But I only get to see the occasional Premiership match live since moving to France just over 3 years ago. But that is just about the only downside of living in France. Where about’s are you in Australia?

I have been proudly wearing my Pink jersey for a while — and getting some ribbing from my friends (let’s just I’m not a skinny cyclist and leave it at that). But now, even some of those people are considering buying some Lemonade. I guess it’s okay now that it’s on the cover of a magazine! :-)

Hopefully this will get Susan to wear a jersey. I want to see her strut her stuff.
