The Big Ol’ Video About the Big Ol’ Ride
Last weekend, I put on my helmetcam and taped hours and hours and hours of video as 70 or so of my close personal friends and I rode around in the desert.
Tomorrow, I’ll tell the story in words.
Today, though, I’d like to present one of the hardest days of riding I’ve ever had, in the form of a 9:24 video.
PS: Damn yer eyes!

I’ve never seen so many fat cyclists in one place before. (Jerseys that is)
Comment by chtrich | 04.27.2009 | 2:45 pm
I’m glad to hear it was hard for most everyone. I felt so stripped of my pride after that ride. Absolutely horrible day for me as well. But hey, I made it. :-)
Comment by MikeonhisBike | 04.27.2009 | 2:46 pm
Nice Video. Looks like a tough ride.
Comment by rich | 04.27.2009 | 2:54 pm
Wow, looks tough….the whole time I watching the descent I kept thinking, man I’d hate to have to climb out of that canyon…..
Comment by dug | 04.27.2009 | 2:55 pm
damn your eyes!
Comment by Rob M | 04.27.2009 | 2:59 pm
Great Video. Great Music.
I got chills (really) when that guy did the handstand.
Do you guys have parachutes under your jerseys? You know, just in case. You definitely won’t see me out there, but I applaud all of you for doing that ride.
Comment by KanyonKris | 04.27.2009 | 3:00 pm
damn MY eyes! That video brought it ALL back.
The video captures the experience – good job.
Comment by Rokrider | 04.27.2009 | 3:06 pm
Fatty, I hate to say it, but I think there might be something wrong with your new helmet cam. The video seems to slow down quite considerably during the uphill portions. I hope it’s still under warranty. But it does look like it was a great day of riding with a great bunch of friends. Can’t wait to read the narrative.
Comment by tim | 04.27.2009 | 3:08 pm
great day, great vid and top soundtrack. Thanks Fatty :)
Comment by Jonnie J | 04.27.2009 | 3:10 pm
Great soundtrack to a great ride. Good times!
Comment by Clydesteve | 04.27.2009 | 3:21 pm
it is amazing how Johnny Cash can repeat the same words so incessantly and make it work.
Fatty – I should know this by now, but how about a warning that Dramamine might be needed to comfortably view the descents?
good job with the vid, BTW.
Comment by Brandy | 04.27.2009 | 3:27 pm
Way cool, so many Fatty jerseys of all different colors.
Comment by Hamish A | 04.27.2009 | 3:29 pm
Wow.
Just about sums it up.
I realy, really, REALLY want to ride White Rim now. Although I could happily do it without the Johnny Cash soundtrack.
That video was fantastic, looking forward to your narrative!
How was the cough & splutter, did your theory hold up to (intense) examination?
Comment by bill w | 04.27.2009 | 3:31 pm
I’ve done that ride twice and miss it sorely. Thanks for posting. I’m stuck in rainy Oregon missing the Utah desert.
Comment by Rick S. | 04.27.2009 | 3:39 pm
that one hurt a little. I need more Johnny Cash on my ipod. Great video, great soundtrack.
Comment by M2 | 04.27.2009 | 3:40 pm
Ya’ll best watch yourselves on them arch’s. One of them big son-of-a-guns collapsed last year. Might ruin yer day if ya know what I means. Nice vid Fatty. Looks like a great ride/day.
Comment by The Incredible Woody | 04.27.2009 | 3:46 pm
The handstand made me break out in a cold sweat. I’m not afraid of heights but I’m definitely afraid of EDGES!!
Comment by KanyonKris | 04.27.2009 | 3:52 pm
Elden, you were flying (make that SuperFly-ing, nope make that SingleFly-ing) down Shafer! That’s real-time speed – no video tricks, right? Crazed!
Comment by Chuck | 04.27.2009 | 4:01 pm
I gotta say, I’m lovin’ the video segments you’re sharing. And JC rocks.
Comment by Grizzly Adam | 04.27.2009 | 4:05 pm
I rode the White Rim.
so they say, so they say.
I rode the White Rim all in one day!
So they say, so they say.
Damn my legs.
Comment by Mike Roadie | 04.27.2009 | 4:26 pm
Where is the road that you are supposed to be riding on????????
Comment by Ed | 04.27.2009 | 4:42 pm
At 5:30 in the video, I like the way you took the long way around on that hairpin. Needed a break?
And if I’m not mistaken, at 8:40 someone was singing “We Are the Champions.” Did she sound better in real life?
Comment by Charisa | 04.27.2009 | 5:54 pm
WOW. I need a helmet cam!!
Comment by MonsieurM | 04.27.2009 | 7:41 pm
Amazing
After seeing that, one thing is clear: I really have to try mountain biking one day.
For us foreigners, where exactly is that place? I have to go there some day…
Comment by MOCougFan | 04.27.2009 | 7:48 pm
Ed,
That was Jilene singing at the end (I was taking the picture). Everyone else was moaning or not looking up when they came up the hill. Jilene was singing and looked like she could do it over again. Cool lady.

very cool…so different from the terrain in Kentucky, hilly, country roads and green…looks like a good time was had by all…another classic Fatty helmet cam production!
Comment by Miles Archer | 04.27.2009 | 10:16 pm
Almost enough to make me take up mountain biking again.
Comment by Nick in Seattle | 04.27.2009 | 10:54 pm
Hope to see you there next year
Comment by PrimalOdyssey | 04.27.2009 | 11:07 pm
Love it. Are you still running the “Oregon Scientific ATC-2000″ Helmet cam. I’ve picked up a ATC-3. Note to self, clear sunny days are best for the Cam. Fatty has it down!
Comment by Dan O | 04.27.2009 | 11:31 pm
Cool stuff. Looks like an awesome ride.
Way different terrain then the Pacific Northwest. Where’s the trees?
Comment by Michelle | 04.28.2009 | 4:45 am
I just about had a heart attack seeing the sheer drop – especially when it was on the same side as your camera – I kept thinking to myself “Fatty, get away from the edge!”. My stomach is still rolling! and I couldn’t watch all of it. It had to be a tough ride – but it was good to see all the FatCyclist jerseys! Win Susan!

Now that’s entertainment!
Comment by buckythedonkey | 04.28.2009 | 8:05 am
Blimey, that arch is a bit of a ball-clencher.
Looking forward to the write-up…

Comment by Saso | 04.28.2009 | 8:53 am
Amazing. It looks like you are climbing in big gears, Ullrich-like. I prefer to spin it on such a long ride, I would not be able to grind it like this all the time.
Comment by bikemike | 04.28.2009 | 10:08 am
holy crap…you did that whole ride in nine minutes?
Comment by Noodle | 04.28.2009 | 10:24 am
Thanks for sharing such a great ride. Although I nearly pooped myself at that handstand at the end.
Comment by Tracy (Oklahoma) | 04.28.2009 | 10:35 am
Great video…I, like so many others, had a hard time watching this and kept thinking you needed to get away from the edge! I don’t handle heights real well, in person or watching someone’s video…Wow!
Comment by matt mccluskey | 04.28.2009 | 10:52 am
Thanks for the video, Fatty.
What software are you using to edit with? I like the transitions from the video of the twins ride.
Thanks!

Thanks for the video, nothing like the “Man in Black” accompanying many men in black…black jersey’s that is. Cheers!
Comment by Fat Cathy | 04.28.2009 | 12:14 pm
I’m with Miles, that is ALMOST enough to get me on a mountain bike again.
Funny how some of the riders were steering clear of you before the ride. Sorta like roaches scurrying away in a kitchen when you turn on the lights.
Comment by Jim | 04.28.2009 | 12:19 pm
The wind on the White Rim has been brutal this spring. Some buddies of mine did a one day trip a few weeks ago – same direction as your ride. 15 hours for them…head down on the bars and just crank. I had to work and was not sorry to miss out.
Comment by Aaron | 04.28.2009 | 12:40 pm
That gave me some fond memories. I rode the White Rim trail the summer before last. It is such a beautiful ride.

Keep em coming

It would be very helpful if you could advise your viewers (readers?) to take a dramamine and watch the video 30 minutes later.
Comment by sdcadbiker | 04.28.2009 | 2:06 pm
I love the remark about White Rim on the UtahMountainBiking web site:
“Most riders spend 3 or 4 days to ride this trail, spending the night at campgrounds. (Two days = Monster. One day = Lunatic.)”
Congratulations to the lunatics! :-)

Nice ride and nice vid.
I saw all those FC jerseys at the beginning and I thought, “Man, this guy has got a regular cult going on.”
Comment by bubbaseadog | 04.28.2009 | 9:23 pm
i liked it ,i li9ked the cash tunes next time lay a little narrative and put the music under.probably should do this back at the studio or house and get rick and dug not his real name to help with the narrative. you are getting better with the helmt cam. but i got just alittle worried about you on the descents, looked to fast for a fat man. win susan go lance
Comment by Marianne | 04.28.2009 | 9:54 pm
Wow. I’m so impressed, loving all the helmet cam rides. What a beautiful part of the country!
Comment by spkell | 04.29.2009 | 8:39 am
excellent choice in music, F. nothing quite like Johnny to channel the solitude & gritty joy-anger of a ride like that.
Comment by Kala | 04.29.2009 | 10:39 am
Fatty, the views you guys got to see are absolutely breath-taking. You are sooo lucky to live where you do! :)
Great vid! Loved the Cash!
WIN SUSAN!

Very well put together, Fatty. I wish I’ll someday have a chance to ride those trails.
