Halloween
No time to write today. Much more important things going on this morning. Specifically, getting Halloween costumes ready.
Nigel is a block of Java code.
For those of you who can read this and want to know how it ends, here’s the back.
The girls — who are deeply into the Harry Potter series right now (we’re currently on Prisoner of Azkaban) wanted to be Harry and Ron.
Brice is working on the most sophisticated costume of all — he’s going to be Captain Duct Tape. He spent a lot of time working on the cape last night (yes, made entirely of duct tape), but he’s not done with the rest of the costume. I think it’s going to be awesome.
As for me, well, I’m Pearl Izumi Man.
I daresay this will attract some attention at the office.
[Note: More on this getup in another post. Meanwhile, would you believe that this jersey is their size XL? Yeah.]
Happy Halloween!
PS: Start thinking about what moustache you’re going to grow. Team Fatty will be starting up Movember this Monday.
PPS: If you’re local, I recommend you participate in Rick Sunderlage’s (not his real name) Hell-O-Ween ride tonight. Basic Info here, and updated info here.

XL? Oh my, I am going to sporting the triple XL soon. Imagine what you would be wearing if you were actaully still fat?
Comment by Stephanie | 10.30.2009 | 9:21 am
Dude, I don’t think you can call yourself “Fat” Cyclist any longer.
Comment by Tom | 10.30.2009 | 9:21 am
I have NO idea what that JAVA stuff means, the girls are so doggone cute and Fatty, you my man, are an inspiration. I bought a Pearl Izumi winter tight bib last year (large) and at 165 standing a whopping 5′8″ look like the Michelin Man. You are looking like a professional.
Comment by Sara | 10.30.2009 | 9:23 am
Maybe it’s a woman’s XL?? :) Looking fit, Fatty!
Comment by Nick | 10.30.2009 | 9:27 am
Fatty I have those bibs you are rocking… the 4D chamois is amazing.
Comment by Chris B | 10.30.2009 | 9:38 am
I think I will rename all my argument arrays “cheese”. Fatty, you’ve taken your nickname to new heights of irony.
Comment by Canadian Roadie | 10.30.2009 | 9:47 am
As someone who’s tried Pearl Izumi wear before, I can totally believe that’s an XL. I’m a girl and the girl stuff doesn’t fit me at all, super short torsos and waaay too tight. No one needs to see that much of me.
Comment by Brandon | 10.30.2009 | 9:47 am
Great post fatty, for those who want to know the joke with the java code, it prints:
‘Say something funny’
if anything is typed other than ‘YOU LOST THE GAME’
then it says:
‘No that’s dumb’
‘SAY SOMETHING FUNNIER’
this is repeated until ‘YOU LOST THE GAME’ is typed, at which point
‘OHH NOOOOOOOO’
‘No I’ll die out here.’
‘Please don’t kill me.’
Is printed on the screen.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
Comment by FatPedro | 10.30.2009 | 10:14 am
Just checked … http://www.thincyclist.com is available. You need to close your current site down and stop shaming all of us who are actually fat. Either that, or have a super burrito for lunch!
Comment by Andrew | 10.30.2009 | 10:16 am
You need an awesome mask made out of the pearl P, methinks.
Comment by Mike | 10.30.2009 | 10:17 am
What FatPedro said! The Movember ’stache is a great idea, can’t wait to see the end result. Handlebar ’stache anyone?

On a side note, it was really great meeting all of you fabulous people on the ride in Austin. It was a life changing event for both me and my little brother. Just so you know, next year, I’ll be another 50lbs lighter and I’ll be riding the big kid distance! I love you all, thanks for being so great and making such a difference.
Cycling Fat and Living Strong,
Big Joe
PS PhillyJen, your pink hair was priceless! Kudos!
Comment by mrbalky | 10.30.2009 | 10:19 am
That Java costume would be awesome if it would compile.
(I am joking, of course, but you can throw new MeanPersonException() now if you like.)
Comment by AngieG | 10.30.2009 | 10:28 am
You are rocking the cycling red carpet in that kit. I think we should change it to the PHAT Cyclist.
The kids look great. Nigel’s java code is very cool and the girls look just like Harry and Ron. I can’t wait to see Brice’s Duct Tape costume. In the country, duct tape is a repair staple like baling wire.
Have a great day!!
Comment by Jodi | 10.30.2009 | 10:32 am
HEY! Roan is Harry Potter this year also. That’s funny. I mean, I understand that Harry is a popular character and all but what are the chances that these cousins would duplicate the idea?
Ok, I guess it’s not that big of a coincidence. I do feel ashamed that we’re barely finishing The Sorcerer’s Stone though because we started it when we were at your house in August. Oy.
One more thing. Eat something. You look thin.
Comment by Rantwick | 10.30.2009 | 10:36 am
Hey man, like all the others said. You weren’t as fat as me even when you were “fat”, let alone now. Stop rubbing it in, you skinny b@$^!*d.
Your kids look awesome. How old are your girls now?
Comment by Haven (used to be Kt) | 10.30.2009 | 10:41 am
What did you use to dye the girls’ hair? Personally, for quick and temporary I like KoolAid (don’t add sugar). They look great in those costumes!!
I don’t understand computer-speak; that doesn’t look like an java I know, but if the beans start talking to me, I’m in trouble.
Your outfit will definitely attract attention at the office. Are you going to walk around in that pose all day? How are you going to handle having to suck in the gut for 8 hours??
Can’t wait to see Brice’s Duct Tape outfit, it sounds awesome!
Comment by Lowrydr | 10.30.2009 | 10:57 am
The kids look great, you however need a red cape and a star mask like Andrew mentioned. But your probably already at the office now. So never mind.
Happy Holloween!!!
Comment by b. murphy | 10.30.2009 | 10:57 am
Tell Nigel to use packaging. Just bad form without it ;)
The javadoc got a chuckle out of me.
Comment by BCC | 10.30.2009 | 11:22 am
My 7yo twin boys are reading Prisoner of Azkaban too!
And one of them is going as Harry Potter (the other is going as a British Redcoat- not so random when you consider we live a couple miles from the start of the American Revolution).
Double-date in ~10 years?
Comment by Clydesteve | 10.30.2009 | 11:33 am
Nice costumes all around.
PI has obviously been following your blog, and put their jersey patterns on a diet. I have a 2003 PI jersey in XL that is pretty floppy on me.
And those are VERRRY sturdy wands Harry & Ron are rocking. Which is understandable. The book based versions both had wand breakage issues, IIRC. So, good call on the wand upgrade.

Tell Nigel all the cool coders are working in Python and Django now.
I LOL’d at the Java, however.
Comment by Kate | 10.30.2009 | 11:36 am
Wow Nigel looks so much like you!
Comment by GenghisKhan | 10.30.2009 | 11:44 am
Fatty–sorry, was that Pearl Izumi Man you said? Methinks it was a typo and you meant to type, “Primal Wear Man”?
Happy All Hallow’s Eve Eve to all! Bwoo ha ha ha!
Comment by Kathy McElhaney | 10.30.2009 | 12:05 pm
Great costumes. Can’t wait to see Captain Duct Tape. As an over 40 woman, I’m hoping I DON’T start growing a moustache. Just sayin’…
Comment by asmathews | 10.30.2009 | 12:06 pm
As a software engineer, I think Nigel’s costume is creative and funny. The twins look great as well. I’m very curious to see Captain Duct Tape.
Pearl Izumi Man….. More like Flashy Bike Kit Man…
Happy Halloween to all!
Comment by Russell | 10.30.2009 | 12:12 pm
Dude, you totally need a cape. One that goes all the way to your ankles.
Comment by Joel P. | 10.30.2009 | 12:13 pm
Ah Fatty, and now you have added another super human/super hero personna to your resume. Not fair, many of us don’t even have one! The kids look great. Hope they have a blast this Halloween.

I am totally going to grow a “Selleck” ala Magnum P.I vintage.
Comment by Rose | 10.30.2009 | 12:20 pm
Nigel needs to add some Mountain Dew and Doritos to his costume for the full software engineer effect!
You look great not-at-all-Fatty! And the girls are darling.
Comment by Clydesteve | 10.30.2009 | 1:46 pm
NO CAPES!!!!!
Comment by Hamish A | 10.30.2009 | 1:55 pm
+1 for the cape.
I’ve fallen fowl of the PI sizing before but you’re rocking that snug fit. Umm, I can say that in a totally manly way, right?
Great costumes for the kids. Still chortling over the “blah blah blah documentation” – looking forward to Captain Duct Tape!
Comment by KanyonKris | 10.30.2009 | 1:56 pm
I like Nigel’s costume (yes, I’m a nerd).
The girls look great.
I hope Brice didn’t buy all the duct tape in the area, I need some for my costume too.
Help me, Pearl Izumi Man, I need new cycling clothes!

Comment by Max | 10.30.2009 | 2:48 pm
Nigel is the spitting image of you! I love his java code, too, especially the comments. The girls look lovely in their Potter getup. Have a great Halloween :)
Comment by Math. | 10.30.2009 | 2:48 pm
Looking good baby, looking good!! Like the other said, you’ll probably have to rethink the whole Fatty thing! All props to you.
Mike: I’m in for the handlebars!
Cheers and have a good week-end everyone.
Comment by Mark Soderlund | 10.30.2009 | 3:06 pm
Isn’t that the same PI jersey and shorts that were featured in Pearl’s recent commercial about illegal performance enhancement? I hope you don’t end the day like the people in that commercial!
Comment by M | 10.30.2009 | 3:46 pm
I had some roommates dress as duct tape one year and let me warn you: Duct tape smells BAD when you sweat in it.
Comment by frilly | 10.30.2009 | 4:03 pm
Fatty your quads ARE beautiful.
I find the Pearl women’s gear to be fairly true to size. More so than Specialized–good grief that stuff runs small. Gain two pounds & you will know it immediately. Not trying to be a suck up but I actually like the fit of my Twin Six gear best of all.
Comment by MattC | 10.30.2009 | 4:28 pm
Fatty…you are obviously dressing up as Stanley Tucci wearing Pearl Izumi (Stanley Izumi?)…good one!
Did my first ride last night post-Austin (where I had a pretty good time for the 90mi if I do say so myself)…apparently after donating blood on Tues, I couldn’t hardly get out of my own way last night. Gosh I want those red blood cells back. Wonder what it would be like to have a hemacrit in the mid-40’s. I bet I would feel like superman. (on a GOOD day I test around 39, and THEN they go ahead and take a pint). Maybe I can get some EPO for tricks or treats.
Comment by josh | 10.30.2009 | 4:33 pm
There is no way that’s a XL I am bigger than you and I wear a medium in Pearl Izumi PRO gear.
Comment by slowdad | 10.30.2009 | 4:57 pm
Block of Java code = best costume ever!
Sheesh, can’t call you fatty any more. Looking lean and mean. Should call yourself Fastdad!
Comment by Jodi J. | 10.30.2009 | 5:17 pm
Your kids look awesome and you’re not too bad yourself! Haha! Happy Halloween!
Comment by Dan O | 10.30.2009 | 5:37 pm
“Block of Java Code – nice. Being in IT, I get it – sorta.
That gives me an idea. What about “Block of Cobol Code” – comprised of IBM punch cards? A bit of retro theme tossed in – so no one gets it.
Well, maybe that weird guy at end of the block with the beard and taped glasses – he’ll get it.
Comment by Juls | 10.30.2009 | 6:55 pm
As a Smalltalk programmer – LOVE the “Blah, blah, blah, documentation” part. Documentation is the worst part of programming!
Also, a Harry Potter fan – love Harry and Ron!
Have fun trick-or-treating! Today may be the last time you fit into the Pearl kit!
Comment by MattyJay | 10.30.2009 | 7:06 pm
That Pearl kit is AWESOME!!!
Comment by Uphillbattle | 10.30.2009 | 7:37 pm
Not so Fatty–Nigel is the spitting image of you…with hair! Great job on the costumes!
Comment by Heather | 10.30.2009 | 7:52 pm
What AWESOME costumes! Wish I had been that creative…just didn’t have any creative ideas this year… Block of Java code – captain Duck Tape – can’t wait to see picture and the girls ROCK it OUT as Harry and Ron… Have a very Happy Halloween!! Hope you all get more treats than tricks… :)
Comment by Philly Jen | 10.30.2009 | 9:04 pm
That’s an XL? Yikes. Cue up Alphaville’s “Big In Japan”…
Great costumes. Your Patronus must be a Clydesdale.

The kids costumes are fabulous….the girls look adorable and Nigel’s block of Java code is hysterical. I can’t wait to see captain duct tape right…you can’t dangle a costume of that amount of awsome in front of us and not let us see the results.
You though…you are looking buff…there is clearly no other word for it. Have a great halloween!!
Comment by Jenni Laurita | 10.31.2009 | 7:59 am
I think if he had an earring, Fatty could go as Mr. Clean.
Comment by Joe Saint John | 10.31.2009 | 10:03 am
I love PhillyJen’s clydesdale patronus comment…priceless. I had no idea Team Fatty had so many Harry Potter fans. We should organize a Potter themed 5K team for next Austin! I’ll be Hagrid!
Comment by Meaghan | 10.31.2009 | 1:00 pm
I can’t believe a block of Java code just made me lose the game.
Comment by Mike from Melbourne | 10.31.2009 | 3:57 pm
Happy Holloween Fatty !
We celebrated our sons 18th birthday today. Can’t believe he is now a young man. Our daughter turns 20 on Wednesday!
BTW, you are looking very fit. Keep up the good work
Comment by Mike from Melbourne | 10.31.2009 | 3:58 pm
Doh ! That’s Halloween not Holloween!
Comment by TonyS | 10.31.2009 | 7:04 pm
Gotta love the Java code… although if I ever saw “Nobody reads the documentation anyway” at work, I’d find out who did it and break all their fingers.
Inevitably, a week later I’ll be looking at the code and have no idea what the person who wrote it was smoking. It gets really bad when it turns out I was the one who wrote it… :)
Anyway, love the costumes… and recommend we hold the Harry Potter themed 5K in Springfield, MO. ‘Cause then I could ride in it. As Dobby.
