Ten Days to Go
I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this (that’s not true; I realize I’ve mentioned it endlessly), but this blog is not my job. You see, I have a regular ol’ full-time job. One that pays the bills and allows me to send my kids to college and stuff.
And I’m at the end of quarter right now, with a big project that needs to be done. Soon. As in, I’m going to be working both early and late on it for a while.
So I’m going to be posting kinda short stuff, and maybe kinda infrequently for the next week or two. Or three.
That said, there are a few things I wanted to (quickly) mention:
Update on the “Help Andreas Knickman Fight Bone Cancer, Tour Italy with Andy-Freaking-Hampsten” Contest
Yesterday I launched a new contest where, by helping out a teenage boy with bone cancerdon’t need to do that name thing, you can win a tour of Italy with Andy Hampsten, for crying out loud.
So far, more than eighty of you have donated, and you’ve raised around $2000. That’s a good start. But you know, considering this is a contest to tour Italy by bike with a cycling legend as your tour guide, it’s not really what I expected.
So today, I’d like to ask those of you who are participating in the “Let’s Lose Ten Pounds by Christmas” challenge to consider donating $10 to the Andreas Knickman fund, as a sort of optional entry fee. And yes, that $10 definitely is eligible for the big prize — touring with Andy Hampsten (and probably The Runner and me, unless you really don’t want us to come).

Note: Yesterday I asked you, when you donated, to indicate it’s for Andreas Knickman. Several of you commented that you had forgotten to do this, which is totally understandable. Don’t worry about it. All donations to this foundation during the contest period will go toward the contest and will be eligible for the prizes. And The confirmation message you receive will indicate you paid a “Firefighters Fund”. That’s the one! Roy Knickman is a firefighter in Santa Maria, and his unit is behind his kid all the way. Cool?
I’ve Stalled Out
I weighed myself today, and — much to my non-surprise — I have gained a pound since last week, bringing me to 169.4 pounds.
Why have I gained a pound? Well, part of it is that it’s just not easy to lose weight during the Winter, seeing as how my favorite way to lose weight is to go on long bike rides, and it has been a cold, rainy, sleety Fall so far.
The other part of it is that, in order to escape aforementioned cold, rainy, sleety Fall last weekend, The Runner and I got out of town. We went to St. George, UT, where we were able to ride in beautiful, sunny, warm desert country in our brand-spanking-new Fat Cyclist gear for a couple of days. Check me out:

Please stop noticing how hard I’m sucking in my gut in that picture for a moment, and get a good look at the incredible job Brent and Ryan at Twin Six did in designing everything this year. I swear, it is the best-looking, best-fitting Team Fatty collection there has ever been. In particular, both The Runner and I have been loving the long-sleeve jersey (in women’s too) — it’s a breathable, fleeced fabric I’m wearing pretty much every time I ride right now. I also love the socks: tall and merino wool. I bought six pair and wear them all the time, including when I’m not on my bike.
And, ahem, all Team Fatty gear is for sale and would make delightful Christmas presents.
But anyway, back to my weight. Why would I weigh more after a weekend of riding? Well, it has something to do, I think, with the fact that after I ride, I’m hungry. And when I’m not at home, the only place to eat would be at restaurants.
You see where I’m going with this, right?
But no more excuses. I’ve got six pounds to lose in less than nine days. It won’t be easy, but I swear: I will do it.

We donated yesterday to the Knickman family but we’ll throw another $50 in there for good measure.
Now that I am in high gear on my healthy eating plan (aka diet), I am expecting to lose another 5-7 pounds before this is over, but again, when you are really heavy, that’s not nearly as impressive as someone mid-weight having to lose 10 pounds.
Still, my knees already feel better!

Had we been able to weigh in yesterday as planned I would have gone from 168.4 to 162.4 for a total weight loss of 6 lbs. putting me right on schedule. Regrettably we had family come visit us from out of state last night. Pizza, beer and holliday cookies flowed freely. So now I have gained back a pound. Curse you Fatty and your incessant need to do wonderful things for people and your awesome giveaways!

Counting calories has helped me, and the fact that I used to eat a pack of pop tarts each morning for 400 calories in one shot. Last week I pounded water at work instead of diet cokes and really felt a solid change.

Let me state that this has not been easy. My weight had bounced around by as much as 2-3lbs. at weigh in times. I’ve been as low as 184.0 and as high as 186.3 the past 3 days. I’m working out like a dog 5x a week. I’ve even resorted to running…..good heavens what’s wrong with me!!?? At this rate I might lose 10lbs. or I could just give up and drink beer…..I miss beer. Off to make a donation later today.

Feeling good. My caloric intake vs. output should have me at a greater loss than this, but I’ll take it. I still on target for 10 by Christmas. I also try to keep in mind that my fight to loss a few stupid pounds is mere peanuts compared to what folks like Andreas have to go through. I also just learned that a close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks for the motivation! I’m so happy the weight is coming off so fast. I’ve never lost more than two pounds a week before, clearly my body knows those seven pounds were excess. I’m even finding I don’t crave sugar like I used to. I do miss beer though. Christmas Eve is gonna be interesting after a 24 day alcohol banishment.
As for Andreas, I do want to donate, but I currently have €2.65 in my bank account, and I don’t get paid until the 25th. So while I won’t be eligible to win, I will pay the entry fee (late).

Woohoo! I am quite sure there is no way I can lose another 5 pounds before the contest ends, but I am still SO psyched that I am trying. I went to a Christmas party today and ate NOTHING – not a single cookie. Well, I weighed myself yesterday and was disappointed to see only a 1 pound loss since I stared on 12/6. I’ve been working my butt off…
Today I weighed again and was happy to see 2.5 off, I weighed myself 3 times just to be sure. Yesterday must have been a fluke.

I only get on the scale on “weigh in” days. Until then cross training workouts twice a day, watching what I eat, hydrate, and making every little bit of some sort of exercise count. Today,I weighed myself in the morning and evening for verification. I even took a picture for proof & submission (my 4 year old enjoys those scale memory buttons). I have told people about losing weight. Their first reaction is “wrong time of year to do that”. I agree it is crazy, and more of a reason to do it. This has driven me more and keeps myself in check. Why pack on “December pounds” then suffer even more to shed them? That idea sounds more twisted! It’s not about a contest but more about pushing yourself to new limits. I’m almost back to my lowest “summer weight” in years of 171 and now want to get into the 160s by 1/1/11. Thanks “Non-Fat” Fatty for the extra motivation!

Yep, that’s right, I gained back the 4 pounds I lost. Luckily I didn’t have to report yesterday, because I was actually up to 303. I’m having some water retention issues from a change in my thyroid meds, but I’m confident that I’ll rapidly lose this and still be able to make my goal by Xmas!
