I just had the fastest day in my life. 8:18. 55 minutes faster than my previous best.
I’m happy. In shock. Incoherent.
The Hammer’s still out on the course, but I’m told she’s having a great race too. I’ll post again when she gets in.

Congratulations. By the look of your face in the picture, remember there is no shame in crying. That’s something you’ve been chasing for awhile.

HELL YEAH! YOU ARE A BAD MOTHER F’ER!!!
Comment by Mike | 08.13.2011 | 3:24 pm
I was going to shout like Centurion, but I’ll just quietly say . . . Wow. Am I fickle if I abandon Superfly love for Stumpy love? (as if it’s about the bike)
Comment by John S | 08.13.2011 | 3:25 pm
Wear that buckle with pride Fatty! Great work!
Hopefully you are really going to keep this bike…
Although, I may be tempted into donating a few bucks to the LA Foundation to get ahold of sub 9 Hr bike. ;>)
Great Job!
Comment by Math In Mtl | 08.13.2011 | 3:31 pm
That smile on your face says it all. Real happy for you. You’ve been chasing that elusive sub-9 for so many years, to see you go out and beat it by 55 min. Wow! You can be proud.
Comment by KanyonKris | 08.13.2011 | 3:31 pm
YEEAAAHHHH! Way to rock and roll! And not just sub-9, sub 8.5!!!!
Comment by Marshall Miller | 08.13.2011 | 3:34 pm
Absolutely fantastic! I followed you throughout the race and was excited to see how well you were doing. You must have killed it on that last segment! Even though I’m a roadie, not a MTBer, you’ve totally inspired me to get out there and take it to the next level.
Way to go, Fatty! YOU ROCK! Here’s hoping for a fantastic finish for The Hammer as well.
Comment by Math In Mtl | 08.13.2011 | 3:34 pm

Comment by Tiffany | 08.13.2011 | 3:40 pm
I mostly read, rarely comment, but just had to say congratulations!
Comment by Lime Crush | 08.13.2011 | 3:40 pm
I knew you could do it, Fatty! Or, at least, I was pretty certain you could drop a sub-9. You may have exceeded my expectations by about 40 minutes …
Now on to the tech discussion: I could be wrong, but I bet the frame wasn’t as big a factor in the equation as was your component choice, i.e. the fact that you actually rode a bike with more than one gear this year. I s’pose the fact that you’re in wicked good shape might have something to do with it too.
Either way, congratulations on achieving this goal after all of these years. You’ve certainly earned it.
Comment by Lonster | 08.13.2011 | 3:40 pm
Amazing ride. Enjoy the endorphin rush! Congratulations.
Comment by SteveH | 08.13.2011 | 3:43 pm

Holy CRAPSICKLES! Fatty…that is an INCREDIBLE time! I knew you were strong this year…but quite honestly I wouldn’t have thought THAT strong…dude…you did PHENOMENAL! Congrats…on your efforts, AND… on the new bike!
See! GEARS! Gears are AMAZING! Of course, it’s probably your SS’ing that helped MAKE you this strong…but gears are your friend! Embrace the gears! (Your knees will love you as you get older!)
Loved the pic too btw…THAT is the look of a man who has reached a LONG standing goal. CRUSHED it even. Squished it between your finger and thumb like a tiny insignificant insect. I bow in your general direction! You are DA MAN!
Comment by Snowcatcher | 08.13.2011 | 3:55 pm
Woohoohoohoohoo! Huge congrats!!!
Comment by davidh-marin,ca | 08.13.2011 | 3:56 pm
Congratulations Fatty!!!! Wear the buckle when you climb Alp D’Huez later this month. It’s a time trial, right?
I’m with ‘Limecrush’. It’s the man not the machine.
Again, my compliments. Hope you bring the buckle to the Gran Fondo so we can all rub it for luck.
Comment by guerch | 08.13.2011 | 4:00 pm

Awesome! Congrats on sub 9 and the bike! I agree with the man over machine comments. I think you would have done it on your trusty old single speed if you had chosen that option too. Maybe next year!

Comment by Bicycle Bill | 08.13.2011 | 4:14 pm
That’s frackin’ AWESOME!!! A century — on dirt — and you came this close (visualize fingers held about a half-inch apart) to cracking the 8-hour barrier!
I’d hate to tell you what my last century time was …. and that was on pavement, yet. I gotta start riding more.

Now that you have the new bike you should auction off your Superfly and obviously proceeds go to your charity of choice, Livestrong, Zambia, WWP as a few ideas.

After following Leadville yesterday I found today a tad boring…went for a bike ride.
I did notice that the low tech Jones kid that lives near you said he was glad he didn’t catch you. So I looked up Kenny’s stats. SHEESH sub-9 for at least six yrs in a row AND probably riding an old steel upgraded mtn bike too. Rode SS with 34×18 means he didn’t gain much speed above gravity on the flats & downhills. All you guys & gals that ride together are beyond words.

Hey Fatty,
Great great job on Leadville. One day I’d like to try both the mountain bike and the trail run. You rocked that race though. Its so funny Tyson was with you, he is a really good friend of mine. We grew up swimming together and have biked and trained together many times since he came back from europe from Pro road racing. Anyway will you call me I have a few questions for ya.
Thanks stud,
Heath
