Grown-Up Problems Suck
I’ve been looking forward to this next weekend for a long time. It’s time for Fall Moab (fiscal) 2012, which will be held in St. George, UT this year (Fall Moab is in Moab on alternating years). It’s the most important Core Team annual tradition we have.
And I am still looking forward to this weekend. But I’m also bummed.
See, a strange thing has happened to the Core Team during the fifteen years or so we’ve been riding together: We’ve all gotten older.
We’ve all exited our thirties, and some of us are closer to fifty than forty at this point.
Weird.
And strangely enough, as we’ve gotten older, we’ve started having grown-up style stuff to contend with.
I’m not going to go into who’s got what stuff to deal with, but a mix of serious health and and family issues are keeping Ricky M, Brad, and (maybe) Dug away this year.
I feel for them — I’ve missed a couple Fall Moab trips myself. And I’m going to miss these guys. The core team is at its absolute best when everyone’s riding.
Basically, when you don’t see your best friends anywhere near as often as you’d like — and nowhere near as often as you used to — it’s a pretty big disappointment to have so many have to miss the trip.
On the other hand, Bob and Kenny will be there, as well as Cori (who took the all-time best picture of me, ever). And outrageously fast guy Chucky Gibson. So this is far from a total disaster.
I’ll be back Monday, with pictures, stories, and possibly even video.
And, more than likely, some new cuts and bruises. That’s just the way Fall Moab is.

And that is also why it is supper important to enjoy those times. They are too few and far between…..

Great to hear you still get to go. Life has a way of creeping up on folks and MTB’ing gets re-prioritized. There’s always next year and the next ride. Just ordered my book today!

“…new cuts and bruises.” Maybe y’all should go in the Spring and avoid the Fall.
A little chilly…the blood clots quicker (though I’ve never found that to be true).
Seriously, have a good time and the best rides.

Well said, Doug. We’ve all been there. I’m still pretty sure Fatty and (new) Core Team will have a ball and do well. Looking forward to great posts next week!

I have seen that picture a couple times before but never noticed until today that you can actually see the air exploding out of the front tire… very cool!

I hope that the all time best pic is of Fatty doing his best Danny Macaskill impression and not what I think it is…

Crap. I order two of the super duper books (notes and such), but I just realized Paypal had my business name, and not, you know, my real name. I’d rather you not address a book to my business name.
My email address in this comment is the same as the email address for the order. Can you let me know that you updated my order with my name?
Sincerely,
An apparent online-shopping n00b (Ashley)

I believe you have to order the book to find out the outcome of that famous photo. (that would have been a great ‘hook’) I believe the Brats recipe should be in the book as well. You’re doing the Brats, right?

Okay, two pictures that give me the chills and make my stomach turn in one sitting, well it might be too much. I hate to think what happened to Fatty in that picture, and the Brats on the stove………looks gross. Sorry.
Have fun Fatty! Take the first aide kit!

I love that I knew what picture it was going to be before I clicked on it.
Have fun!

David…you’re like a veritable encyclopedia of Fatty facts n stuff…I think back on fun pics n posts all the time, but would have to look thru the archives forever to find them. Or maybe you just have WAY more free time than I do??

Major disappointment for me. Fall Moab originated in the Fall of 1994 and has been the highlight of the year ever since. I’ll sit this weekend out but my thoughts will be with the core team. Ride hard. If you fall, bottle the blood up and bring it home to me. We’ll ride again soon. And when we do, I will be riding with a renewed purpose. Stand back.

@MattC I blame Wife#1 for turning me on to Fatty. As for free time never as much as one wants. As for Fatty facts, my memory is visually cued; I can’t remember names worth a darn, but I’ll remember seeing a picture, just not where. Luckily my computer ’search’ skills are marginally adept enough for this site. And as they say a picture is worth a thousand……oh I can’t remember.
