Marge
A Note from Fatty: My writeup of the 25 Hours in Frog Hollow is taking a break today, because this story matters more.
If you’ve ever been riding your bike and found yourself thinking, “I hope I’m still doing this when I’m in my seventies,” you have—maybe without meaning to—actually been thinking to yourself, “I want to be like Marge.”
Now, I don’t really know Marge well myself. But she’s read the blog pretty much since I’ve had it, and has proudly ridden wearing the Fat Cyclist jersey, both on road and dirt.
And she is she is a crucial part of my sister Kellene’s core riding group.
Read more here (an article in Women’s Adventure Magazine, by Kristen Lummis) to learn about Marge’s amazing adventures and attitude.
I guarantee, you’ll want to be like Marge.
But right now, Marge could use some cheering up. My sister Kellene is going to explain, below. Read what she says (and check out the pics), and then take a minute or two to leave a comment for Marge. Trust me; she’ll get and appreciate what you have to say.
My Friend Marge Gunderson….
She is a friend to all. When you call her up she always answers: ”Hi my friend!”
There is nothing she won’t try! She loves mountain biking, road biking, dirt biking, trips to Lake Powell, skiing, hiking, 4-wheeling. These photos are just from the last few years!
She has ridden so many Colorado Passes, events and trails all over the age of 70!
For her birthday each year we ride how ever old she is in miles! This year it was 72!
She had a terrible mountain bike accident in September. A spinal cord injury on C4,5,and 6. It has left her mostly paralyzed. She’s not giving up!
She is at Craig Hospital in Denver for a 3 month rehabilitation . She remains positive and is working each day with therapists to regain her independence!
Never was there a more kind, giving, friendly, adventurous woman!
PS from Fatty: We’re thinking of and rooting for you, Marge!
PPS from Fatty: If you want to follow and stay in touch with Marge, you can do so over at her CaringBridge page.

Marge,
You are a true inspiration for a 40 something guy that just found endurance sports 5 years ago. No more wishing that I had started this pursuit earlier and looking forward to many many more years of PRs and the fun that comes from both training and competing!
I wish you the best in your recovery and even though it may be the toughest challenge that you have had put in front of you, Im sure you will come out smiling! You are in my thoughts!! :)

Marge, I want to be like you when I grow up!! :) (I’m 42, btw…)
Truly, though, it inspires me to know that there are people who embrace physical activity throughout their whole lives. I want to be like that and by doing so, I hope I can then inspire other people – most importantly, my children – to be active and have fun in their lives. Keep on keeping on!!!

At 68yy , i hope i avoid Marge’s situation ? It becomes more difficult to deal with health issues after a fall . 3 helmets this year attest to that fact !
100 miles of nowhere in the past , mentioned participants on an Aircraft Carrier , with the SS G.W. heading to the #philippines , i am hoping that someone that reads the blog , can provide contact points ? Those with spare bike parts may feel this is a way to help ?

Dear Marge,
Our friend Stephanie crashed this spring in Loveland, CO. She had to wear a neck brace for many months and eventually had surgery. We complemented her on her sweet neck brace tan.
Your injury sounds much more serious and I want to say- that sucks. I wish you a strong recovery that exceeds all of the doctors’ expectations.

There is no one like Marge. From the first day I met her, she made me feel like an indispensable friend. Her smile is electric and her spirit is contagious. Even during the early days of her injury, she would make an effort to lighten the mood in her hospital room.
It’s been difficult for her (to say the least), I’m sure. But she’s also a woman of faith and her faith, along with an incredible support system of family and friends will make the difference.
Thanks to everyone for supporting her!

Marge, I’m a big believer in miracles, after helping my 8 year old after a swimming accident left her with a broken neck (C1 vertebra that ends in death or paralysis 98% of the time, according to our pediatric orthopedic surgeon). She saw miracle after miracle, and I’m sure you will, too.
Best of luck, and we’ll all be praying for you!

Hi Marge
Good luck with your fight back to bike – I’m in my mid 50s and live in the UK. In the summer, I was riding on a short touring holiday when I met up with some guys in their 70s who were doing a thousand mile ride from one end of the UK to the other. One guy had both hips replaced and was enjoying riding more than ever. I know you have a tougher battle to get back to the bike and I’ve only met you just now through Fatty’s blog – but I’m betting you’re going to be back there soon.
Very best
Alister

Thank you for sharing Fatty. It is stories like this that really add extra meaning to your blog – like icing on the cake. I love that you share stories like Marge’s. If there is anything I can do to help, if there is a fundraiser being held or if there is anything we can do to support Marge from afar, please write about it.
Dear Marge – I am so, so sad to hear of your accident. It is wonderful that you have such an amazing group of ladies to help support you during this time. Having an amazing support network is critical to sucess, but your attitude is going to be the key, and it sounds like you have positive attitude in spades. I most definitely want to be like you when I grow up. Well, let’s face it, I probably never will, but I hope that when I reach my 70’s (and it’s not that far away), I’m still going strong riding my bike and having one adventure after another. This silly age thing is but a number that we shouldn’t let define what we can and can’t do. You are a shining example of this. I am sending you as much positive energy as I can from Alaska. I hope that we can get updates on your progress from Kellene. I’d love to meet you and give you a huge hug some day. You are in my thoughts and prayers! Take care wonderful, amazing lady!

In our biking group, the refrain has always been, “Man, I hope I’m like Marge when I’m her age,” followed by, “Who are we kidding? We’re not like Marge now!” (we range in age from 49 to, well, over 49!). She has been an inspiration to all of us and continues to be. Marge,
I don’t know you personally but seeing what you’ve been doing over the last few years is a true inspiration! Hard work and determination will win the day for sure. Stay positive. Stay strong.
As John Steinbeck said
“A sad soul can kill you quicker, far quicker, than a germ.”
So keep a positive attitude and know you have many people pulling for you.

You are a complete inspiration Marge and I wish you a speedy recovery … from the UK.
These sound like very tough times, but I don’t doubt you have the spirit (and the fabulous friends) that will ensure you make it.
Thanks for sharing the story Fatty, look forward to the updates.

Marge
In races Fatty talks about ‘the rabbit’ someone who goes out front for others to follow. As someone younger, if only slightly, thank you for being the rabbit for your friends, family, and now the Fatty Nation. I wish you the best in your recovery and your own personal recovery. Fight Like Susan!
Next year, if you’ll let us, I’m sure there are many FoF’s who would love to join you in that 73 mile celebration. With you, beside you, but never in front, because that’s where the rabbit runs!
Thank you Elden and Kellene for sharing this with us.

Fight Like Susan, Marge. and you know that means fight hard with unflagging good spirits and energy.
Permission granted to grieve and feel sad for your current loss of mobility, and know I am sad for your too. Sadness gives the importance and respect to your great physicality and zest for life.
Permission granted to be afraid – fear can result in rage, but it can be the catalyst for courage and wisdom – do that!

I just read some very promising articles about the spinal cord rehab program they have and you’re definitely in the right place. Here’s to gaining your independence back bit by bit!

Hi Marge!
My favorite person in the world is my 89-year-old grandfather. After a horrific neck injury several years ago, he is back to running 3 miles, 3 times a week. Determination and positivity (as well as the occasional dose of healthy irritability!) were keys to his recovery.
Your determination and positivity are obvious! My thoughts are with you as you work towards recovery and health.
Blessed be,
Kristina

Hi Marge!!
I had a serious face plant on a century ride 4 years ago. Couldn’t feel a thing from the neck down. So scary! But I’m happy to report that after a cervical fusion of C4,5,6 I’m back on my feet AND the bike and doing all the things I love. Positive attitude, determination and supportive friends and family were central to my recovery.
It sounds like you have an abundance of all 3!!! I’ll be thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way.
Here’s to your very speedy recovery!!

In a day and age in which the word “inspiring” is used all to liberally, you truly are just that. In fact, that particular word doesn’t seem to do you justice. While I often read here, I don’t generally comment, but I couldn’t let this go without saying something… even if I don’t know exactly what to say. Sending you good thoughts and healing and wishes for a very speedy recovery. We all need people like you to keep us motivated to achieve great things!

Comment by Theslowcyclist | 11.12.2013 | 8:18 pm
Marge,
I injured my back this spring and quickly went from podium finishes to walking with a cane. I could barely walk to my car or stand up for more than a few minutes. Nothing compared to what you are enduring to be sure, but I slipped into a depression nonetheless. I felt a loss of identity from being fit, fast and invincible to feeling very mortal.
I will probably never compete again but I find the spiritual part of riding for me can still be accessed through other means. Just being outside on a beautiful day , looking into the clouds I feel connected to something bigger than self. That same cleansing feeling I got with my many long outdoor adventures I used to take, where all my worries of daily life just fell away when it was just me, my bike and the vast outdoors.
With a little discipline, slowing down and clearing my mind of extraneous thoughts I can still get there. The bike help me connect with something bigger and the injury has taught me I am not my body which will eventually fail, but I actually am part of that something bigger. It’s ironic I had to lose my sense of self to discover that.
I hope your journey takes you to a good place. Remember with all these warm wishes, we are all connected on this journey of life pulling for each other, trying to find joy and peace. I hope you find some along your road back.
Brandon

Hello Marge,
Your story on Fatty’s blog reminds me of my father who’s heart disease cut short his outdoor adventures but also led him to new indoor ones.
May you have the Luck of the Irish in a full recovery, if anyone can do it, you can. Even so, know there is much living and teaching to be done and many people who would be enriched by knowing you and learning about your remarkable attitude to life and overcoming of obstacles. This is just a turning point, not even close to the end of the road.
Best wishes to you and your family.

I remember hearing about you, Marge, from just about everybody in the area. When we met, I thought it was really quite impressive that everybody spoke of you so highly. Though I was invited to, I never had the opportunity to join you for a ride. I also didn’t know you were in your seventies until Bonnie told me about everything that had happened- as if I needed even more of a reason to be impressed. You honestly did not look a day over 50.
Best wishes to you, as well as prayers for a speedy and complete recovery on your part.
